Hello Friends, Akshay Bhardwaj here. Today, we are going to talk about a very important topic – a strategy for repeaters. Many friends and aspirants who have taken the SSC exams before asked me to share some tips. They want to know what to improve, what to fix, and what mistakes to avoid this time around.
I have already shared a detailed guide for beginners in my previous blogs. Today, my entire focus is on repeaters. If you did not clear the exam in your last attempt, do not worry. I have been through this phase myself. I could not clear the SSC CGL Mains in 2023. I know the disappointment. But I also know how to bounce back.
Table of Contents
Here is exactly what you need to change in your preparation for SSC CGL 2026.
The Biggest Game Changer – Sectional Timing
The most important thing you need to understand this year is the introduction of sectional timing. This one change has completely flipped the exam strategy.
In the past, we had a fixed template in our minds for the 1 hour Prelims exam. We used to give 20 to 25 minutes to Maths, 16 to 18 minutes to Reasoning, 8 to 10 minutes to English, and 5 to 7 minutes to GK.
That old strategy is dead. You can no longer save time in GK and use it for Maths.
The New Time Limits
Here is what you will face in the exam hall now –
| Exam Tier | Section | Time Allowed | Rule |
| Tier 1 (Prelims) | Maths, GK, English, Reasoning | 15 Minutes Each | Once 15 minutes are over, the section locks automatically. You cannot go back. |
| Tier 2 (Mains) | Maths, GK, English, Reasoning | 30 Minutes Each | Each section locks after exactly 30 minutes. |
Because of this new rule, your practice methods must change. You need to develop incredible speed for each specific subject.
Do Not Ignore Computer and Typing Tests
Many students take the Computer and Typing sections very lightly. This is a massive mistake. Last year, many high-scoring candidates failed to get their dream post or failed the exam completely just because they ignored these two areas.

The Computer Test Rule
The computer test is qualifying, but it has a trap. There are two different cut-offs –
- Normal Cut-off – For non-CPT posts.
- Higher Cut-off – For CPT posts (like CSS, MEA, Excise Inspector).
The computer paper was surprisingly difficult recently. You cannot rely on basic knowledge anymore. You must study computer science seriously and watch detailed one-shot videos to clear that higher cut-off.
The Typing Test Rule
You will get a 15-minute typing test where you must complete 2000 key depressions. Before the real test, there is a short mock typing session.
- Do not leave typing practice for the last month.
- Start practicing now. Your keyboard or mouse in the exam center might be of bad quality. You need a solid typing speed to survive bad hardware on exam day.
Step 1 – Honest Self-Assessment
If your name was not on the final merit list last year, it hurts. But after a few days, you need to sit down and analyze why it happened.
Did you miss the cut-off by 1 or 2 marks? If yes, maybe it was just a bad day or a few silly mistakes.
Did you miss the cut-off by a huge margin? If yes, your basic preparation has serious flaws.
When my 2023 Mains result came, I was far behind the border line. I had to accept my mistakes.
Check Your Answer Key
Whenever possible, always download and analyze your official answer key. In the exam hall, we feel we marked the right answer. But the answer key reveals the truth.
Checking the answer key is the only way to find your silly mistakes. Write these mistakes down so you never repeat them.
My Personal Mistake
During my early attempts, I used traditional, long methods to solve Maths questions. I was taking 3 to 4 minutes per question. With the new sectional timing, taking 3 minutes for one question is suicide.
I realized I needed to learn fast calculation techniques and mind tricks. However, do not rely only on tricks. If the examiner changes the question slightly, your trick will fail. Build a strong basic foundation first, and then apply speed tricks over it.
Subject-Wise Adjustments for Repeaters
Since you are a repeater, your basic syllabus is already complete. Do not start from zero. Your only focus should be Revision and Practice.
1. Mathematics
Maths requires daily touch. If you stop practicing, you will forget the formulas and your calculation speed will drop.
- Revise your formula notes regularly.
- Give daily sectional mock tests to adapt to the 15-minute limit.
2. English Comprehension
Grammar rules (like Subject-Verb Agreement or Narration) stay in your brain once you understand the concept. But Vocabulary is an endless ocean. You can never memorize the entire dictionary.
- Practice vocabulary every single day.
- Give specific vocabulary mock tests. I recommend using the ‘Vocabulary for All Government Exams’ series on Testbook.
- You can also use the English Madhyam app specifically for daily English reading and sectional mocks.
3. General Knowledge and Current Affairs
Your static GK (History, Geography, Polity) will not change. Just revise your old notes. But Current Affairs requires fresh effort.
Focus heavily on these specific topics –
- International Indices and Ratings – (Example – India’s rank in the Henley Passport Index or WEF Energy Index).
- Sports Events – National Games, Khelo India, and international shooting or chess tournaments.
- Awards – Nobel Prizes, Padma Shri, Bharat Ratna, and Police Medals (SSC asked about Police Medals in Mains recently).
- Reports – The latest India State of Forest Report.
How to study Current Affairs – Do not waste time watching 1-hour daily news videos. Read monthly compilation magazines. Before the exam, search for Marathon videos on YouTube (like Parmar Sir’s videos). Watch their specific marathons on Sports, Defense, and Science, and revise their PDFs multiple times.
The Right Way to Attempt Mock Tests
Not giving enough mock tests is the biggest reason repeaters fail again.
Follow these Mock Test Rules –
- Use Multiple Platforms – Do not buy just one mock test pass. Buy at least two different platforms. Online education is very affordable now. Consider this an investment in your future.
- Use a PC or Laptop – Do not give mock tests on your mobile phone. You need to train your hand and eyes for a real computer screen and mouse.
- Mix the Difficulty – Do not just solve easy mocks. Attempt easy, moderate, and hard mocks so you do not panic if the real exam is tough.
- Make a Mistake Notebook – If you miss a current affair question or learn a new vocabulary word in a mock, write it down in a special notebook. Revise this notebook weekly.
Stop Mocks Before the Exam
Do not give mock tests 1 or 2 days before the actual exam. If you score poorly in that last mock, self-doubt will destroy your confidence. Spend the last few days only revising your notes, math formulas, and current affair PDFs.
Big Mistakes You Must Avoid This Year
1. Changing Your Teachers
Many students fail the exam and immediately blame their teachers. They buy a new course from a new teacher. Do not do this. You spent a year learning one teacher’s methods. If you switch now, you will confuse your brain. If you are weak in just one topic (like Simple Interest), go to YouTube and search for a specific video on that topic. Do not change your entire core strategy.
2. Comparing Yourself to Others
This is very important for you and your parents to understand. Someone might clear the exam in their first attempt. You might be on your third attempt. It does not matter. Everyone has a different journey. Some people get successful at 22, others at 25. External comparison only brings frustration. Your motivation must come from inside you. Just focus on your own daily routine.
3. Worrying About High-Scorers
Sometimes, candidates who are already selected give the exam again to get a better post (like moving from South India to North India). Many freshers get frustrated by this. But remember, giving the exam is their constitutional right. You cannot stop them. Stop worrying about who is sitting in the exam hall and start focusing on your own target score.
Advice for Working Aspirants & Plan B
If you are doing a private job while preparing, do not feel demotivated. You have to be smart with your time. Use your lunch breaks to read current affairs. Use your travel time in the bus or train to revise vocabulary flashcards. Do not get comfortable in your current job if it is not your dream. Keep pushing yourself to improve.
Keep a Plan B Ready
Since the SSC CGL is highly competitive, it is smart to give similar exams to increase your chances. The syllabus is almost exactly the same for these exams –
- SSC Exams – CHSL, CPO, Selection Post, Stenographer, and SSC JE.
- Railway Exams – RRB ALP, NTPC, and RPF.
- Banking Exams – IBPS PO/Clerk, SBI PO/Clerk, and RRB PO/Clerk.
Giving these exams will remove your exam fear and keep you in the practice zone all year round.
