The Two Main Rules of SSC Certificates
Before we talk about specific categories, you must know what the SSC notification clearly says. SSC demands two main things for any category claim –
- Prescribed Format – Your certificate must match the exact layout and format given by the central government.
- Crucial Date – This is the cutoff date before which your certificate should ideally be issued.

The OBC certificate causes the maximum confusion among students. Here is what you need to check to make sure your certificate is valid for the CGL 2026 exam.
Central vs. State Format There are two types of OBC certificates – State Government and Central Government. SSC exams are for central government jobs. So, only the Central Government format is accepted. Your state OBC or BC certificate will be straight away rejected in document verification.
How to check if your certificate is central? Look at the text on your document. It must clearly say – “Recognized as backward classes under Government of India.” It will also have a list of government order numbers. If you see this line, your certificate format is correct.
The Crucial Date Confusion the CGL notification says that the commission will not force candidates to show a certificate issued within the crucial date. But it also says you need a valid certificate during Document Verification (DV). This double talk creates a lot of doubts in students’ minds.
To be completely safe, we must look at past court judgments. A safe OBC certificate is one that is issued within one year before the application closing date (which is 22nd June 2026). If your certificate is older than one year from today, just apply for a new one right now to avoid future tension.
Who Falls Under OBC? (The Income Rule) The rules about income are often misunderstood. Let me clear them up based on different parent job types –
- Private Sector Parents – If both your parents work in private jobs, their total annual income must be less than ₹8 lakh.
- Farming Parents – If your parents are farmers, their agricultural income is not counted at all. It does not matter how much they earn from farming. Only the land size is verified.
- Government Employee Parents – This is where many get stuck. If your parents are government employees (working or retired), their salary does not count. What matters is the rank at which they joined the service. If your parents joined in Group C or Group D posts, you will easily get the OBC certificate.
Common Doubts about OBC
- I work in a private company and earn more than ₹8 lakh. Will I get OBC? Yes. Your personal income is not counted at all. Only your parents’ income is checked.
- I am married. Will my husband/wife’s income be counted? No. Spouse income is also not counted. Again, only parental income matters.

If you belong to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), the rules are very strict. The SSC CGL 2026 notification is very clear about the financial years. A single mistake in the dates means direct rejection in DV.
Your EWS certificate must mention two specific years –
- Valid For Year – It should say “Valid for the Financial Year 2026-2027”. You will find this at the top of the certificate.
- Basis Year – In the main paragraph, it should clearly state that it is issued on the basis of income for the “Financial Year 2025-2026”.
If your EWS certificate does not have these exact years, it is useless for this exam. You must apply for a new one immediately. You have time until the closing date on 22nd June, so do not panic. Go to your local center and apply for it today.

For my friends from the SC and ST categories, things are very simple and relaxed. Once you get an SC or ST certificate, it is basically valid forever. There is no confusing crucial date or income limit to worry about here.
Just check your certificate to make sure it has the line – “Recognized as Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe.” While it is always good to have a fresh digital certificate, your old certificate will not cause any trouble at all during the SSC document verification process.
Important Advice from a Fellow Aspirant
As someone who has been through the SSC CPO process recently, I want to give you a very practical piece of advice. Do not wait for your new certificate to fill out the SSC CGL form.
When you apply online for the exam, SSC does not ask you to upload the physical certificate. You just have to select your category in the form. So, first go and submit your SSC application. Do not delay it because the SSC website server always crashes in the last few days of the deadline.
Once your application is submitted safely, apply online or offline for your new category certificate. When you get called for document verification next year, carry all your old and new certificates together. You will face zero problems.
