What is SSC CGL?

SSC CGL stands for Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level. It is one of the biggest government job exams in India. Every year, around 30 lakh students fill out the SSC CGL application form. The government conducts this exam to hire staff for various Group ‘B’ and Group ‘C’ posts. You can get a job in top ministries and departments like the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Ministry of External Affairs, and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

We were all keenly waiting for the SSC CGL notification 2026. The wait is finally over! The Staff Selection Commission officially released the notification on May 21, 2026.

The official PDF is available on their new website, https -//ssc.gov.in. Now that the PDF is out, we have the exact age limit, eligibility, and post-wise details.

SSC CGL Form Date 2026

You must know the exact timeline so you do not miss any deadlines –

• Dates for submission of online applications – May 21, 2026, to June 22, 2026.
• Last date and time for receipt of online applications – June 22, 2026 (23 -00 hours).
• Last date and time for making online fee payment – June 23, 2026 (23 -00 hours).
• Window for Application Form Correction – June 29, 2026, to July 01, 2026 (23 -00 hours).

You must act fast. Do not wait for the SSC CGL last date to apply, as the server always experiences heavy loads during the closing days. Please keep your documents ready and complete your application well before June 22.

SSC CGL Exam Date 2026

When is the SSC CGL 2026 exam? Here is the official tentative schedule –

• Tier-I (Computer Based Examination) – August-September, 2026.
• Tier-II (Computer Based Examination) – December, 2026.

First, we need to focus 100% on the Tier-I exam. It is an online objective test. While it is qualifying in nature to shortlist candidates for Tier-II, the cut-offs go very high, so we must score exceptionally well.

SSC CGL 2026 Age Limit and Eligibility

To fill out the SSC CGL application form 2026, you need a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or equivalent. Final-year students can also apply, but they must possess the essential qualification on or before the cut-off date of August 1, 2026.

The age limit (as on 01-08-2026) depends on the post you want –

• For posts with an age limit of 18-27 years – Born between 02-08-1999 and 01-08-2008.
• For posts with an age limit of 20-30 years – Born between 02-08-1996 and 01-08-2006.
• For posts with an age limit of 18-30 years – Born between 02-08-1996 and 01-08-2008.
• For posts with an age limit of 18-32 years (like Junior Statistical Officer) – Born between 02-08-1994 and 01-08-2008.

There is age relaxation for reserved categories – 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST, and up to 10 years for PwBD.

SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 Exam Pattern

Here is the updated SSC CGL exam pattern for 2026. The biggest detail this year is the strict sectional timing in the Tier-I exam. You will get exactly 15 minutes for each section.

Important Rules for Tier 1 –

• The exam consists of Objective Type, Multiple choice questions.
• There is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer.
• Because of the 15-minute sectional timer for each subject, you cannot manage time freely across sections. You must be fast!

SSC CGL 2026 Tier 2 Exam Pattern

Tier-II is the mains exam. This paper decides our final merit list. It includes sectional timing as well.

How to Apply – SSC CGL Application Form 2026

The application process is entirely online. Here is a simple step-by-step guide –

1. Open the Website – Go to the official new website https -//ssc.gov.in.
2. Registration – If you haven’t already, complete your One Time Registration (OTR) on the new website (old ssc.nic.in OTRs won’t work). You can opt for Aadhaar Based Authentication.
3. Live Photo – You are not required to have a pre-existing photograph. The application module will capture a live photograph of you via webcam or smartphone. Make sure you have a plain background, look straight, and do not wear a cap, mask, or spectacles.
4. Upload Signature – Upload your scanned signature in JPEG/JPG format (10 to 20 KB).
5. Pay the Fee – The fee is Rs. 100. Women, SC, ST, PwBD, and Ex-servicemen are exempted from paying the fee.
6. Submit – Before submission, check through the Preview/Print option that you have filled in the correct details. Keep a printout for your records.

My Personal Preparation Strategy

As an aspirant simultaneously preparing for CPO Mains, my schedule is tight. I am currently on a strict 45-day testing phase to master advanced English grammar and a 60-day plan to lock down rare vocabulary, idioms, and one-word substitutions. I highly recommend taking advanced English linguistics seriously for CGL as well.

Also, observing recent examination trends, I strongly believe SSC is increasingly utilizing Artificial Intelligence to generate their question paper sets. This means we can expect highly dynamic, varied, and unconventional question patterns across different shifts. To counter this –

• Focus on Concepts, Not Just Tricks – Because AI-generated papers can twist standard questions easily.
• Previous Year Questions (PYQs) – SSC still bases its core logic on past papers. Solve papers rigorously.
• Mock Tests – Give at least two mock tests every week to adapt to the new 15-minute sectional timing in Prelims. Sit in a quiet room and evaluate your mistakes strictly.
