If you are preparing for government exams like I am, we all know one harsh truth – clearing the written paper is only half the battle. The typing test is where many hardworking students fail. I have seen friends panic during the actual exam because the interface is completely different from what they practiced at home.
Today, I want to help my fellow brothers and sisters preparing for the Railway posts. I am sharing the exact RRB NTPC typing test rules, how they calculate our speed, and a free practice tool you can run on your own computer.

RRB Typing Exam Rules
When we practice on normal typing websites, we get used to fixing our mistakes. The real RRB exam does not allow this. Here is what you will actually face in the exam hall –
- The Time Limit – You will get exactly 10 minutes. No more, no less.
- The Speed Target – You must type 30 Words Per Minute (WPM) in English, or 25 WPM in Hindi.
- The Backspace Ban – This is the biggest shocker. Your backspace key and delete key are dead during the test. You cannot erase a mistake once you type it.
- No Arrow Keys or Mouse – You cannot click and go back to fix a word.
- It is Only Qualifying – The good news is that typing marks are not added to the final merit list. You just need to pass.
The Formula – How They Calculate Our Speed
The Railway Recruitment Board uses a very strict penalty formula. If you do not understand this, you might fail even if you type fast. Here is how they evaluate our screens –
- They count total mistakes – Every wrong word or skipped word is a mistake.
- The 5% Relief – They forgive mistakes up to 5% of your total typed words.
- The Heavy Penalty – For every mistake after that 5% limit, they deduct 10 words from your total count!
Let me give you a quick example –
Let’s say you typed 400 words.
5% of 400 is 20 words. They forgive those 20 mistakes.
But if you made 25 mistakes, you have 5 extra mistakes.
Penalty = 5 mistakes × 10 words = 50 words deducted!
Your net words are now 350. Divided by 10 minutes = 35 WPM.
If you make too many mistakes, that 10x penalty will push your speed below 30 WPM, and you will fail.

Because regular websites let us use backspace, we build bad muscle memory. To fix this, I have provided a simple code below.
This code works just like the RRB software. It sets a 10-minute timer, totally blocks your backspace and arrow keys, and tells you whether you PASS or FAIL at the end based on the exact Railway formula.
My Personal Advice for the Typing Test
As someone going through the SSC CPO Mains and CGL grind, here is some honest advice from my side –
- Do not practice on a laptop – Laptops have very soft, flat keys. The exam center will give you an old, thick desktop keyboard (like Dell or Acer). Go to a local computer shop, buy a basic 300-rupee wired keyboard, and plug it into your laptop for practice.
- Forget about speed, focus on accuracy – Because one mistake eats 10 words, accuracy is everything. Type slowly and carefully at first. If your accuracy is 98%, your speed will automatically cross 30 WPM.
- Do not look at your hands – Keep your eyes glued to the screen. If you look down to find a key, you will lose your place in the paragraph and skip words. Skipping a word is considered a full mistake.
