What Exactly Does an SSC CGL AAO Do?
The CAG is divided into two main parts – Accounts (which maintains financial records) and Audit (which checks those records). As an AAO, you fall under the Audit department.
Your primary job is to ensure government funds are used correctly. You will conduct financial, compliance, and performance audits for various departments, including Railways, Defense, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and State Governments.
Key Work Details –
- The Team – You usually travel in a team of 4 to 6 people, led by a Senior Audit Officer.
- Field vs Desk – While the official rule is 20% field and 80% desk work, reality is different. You can expect to spend about 60% to 70% of your time on field audits.
- The Work – It involves heavy documentation and careful analysis of files.

Power, Promotion, and Status
1. The Gazetted Status
This is the only post in SSC CGL that makes you a Gazetted Officer (Group B) from Day 1. You also get signing authority as a section head immediately. In almost every other SSC job, you will not have people working directly under you initially, but as an AAO, you do.
2. Promotions
- After 4 years – You are upgraded to a 5400 Grade Pay (still Group B).
- Next Step – Senior Audit Officer (Class 1 / Group A Officer).
- Speed – Promotions can be slow in North India. However, if you are posted in South India or join the newly formed CEA (Training) cadre, promotions are much faster.
3. Departmental Exams
You will need to pass SAS and other departmental exams. Clearing these within your first 10 years grants you special increments. Passing all of them can boost your monthly in-hand salary by ₹10,000 to ₹12,000 for the rest of your career.
Is This Job Right For You?
Every job has its highs and lows. Here is a quick breakdown to help you decide.
The Pros –
- Huge Respect – You deal directly with department heads and receive immense respect wherever you go to audit.
- No Public Dealing – You deal with government departments, not the general public.
- Financial Security – The highest starting salary in CGL.
- Work-Life Balance – Generally stable office hours when not on tour.
The Cons –
- Travel Heavy – If you hate traveling, the frequent audit tours will exhaust you.
- Repetitive Desk Work – Going through endless files and financial records is not for everyone.
- Slow Promotions – Depending on your zone, climbing the ladder can take time.
How to Prepare and Get In
To become an AAO, a standard Bachelor’s degree is all you need. (Degrees like CA, CS, or MBA are desirable but not mandatory). The age limit is 18 to 30 years.
My Advice for Selection
Do not worry about the special Finance & Economics paper right now. Your sole focus should be on Tier 1. The cut-off for the AAO list in Prelims is always exceptionally high (often touching 179/200). If you score high enough to clear the AAO Tier 1 cut-off, you are already ahead of 90% of the competition and practically guarantee yourself a good job in the Mains.
Keep grinding, focus on the basics, and let us clear these exams together. Good luck.
